Dreamers in Action - Term 3 Highlights

As another busy term wraps up, we’ve compiled highlights from Term 3 across our programmes in High School and Primary school. From STEM to arts and music, health and fitness, and overall wellbeing, it has been a jam packed term of learning, growth and discovery for our Dreamers and their Navigators.

High School

Our high school team has been focused on key areas such as STEM, arts and music, health and fitness, and overall wellbeing.

In the arts and music space, students engaged in creative activities like printmaking at the Quarry Arts Centre and explored scientific concepts such as gravity, tension, and molecules during their visits to the Questionable Research Labs. They also participated in drum lessons, gaining a deeper understanding of rhythm and sound, and took part in a drama theatre programme, which allowed them to explore performance and expression.

On the health, fitness, and wellbeing front, Dreamers learned about the importance of nutrition and balanced eating, including how to plan meals, create recipes, cook, and shop for groceries. They stayed active with activities like biking, jogging, basketball, breakdancing, and jiu-jitsu. Furthermore, we integrated nature-based learning to help them connect with their environment and foster a sense of wellbeing.

Additionally, they’ve been offering guidance and support for those Dreamers who are preparing for their NCEAs and life beyond school. They’ve worked on vision boarding and goal setting, helping them to articulate their future aspirations. To further equip them for life after school, they participated in interview preparation techniques, building confidence for their future career paths.

Primary

The primary team has been dedicated to helping the youngest Dreamers develop their reading and writing skills. Alongside literacy, they focused on memory games that provide consistency and enhance learning through play.

They placed a significant emphasis on STEAM activities. In science, the Dreamers learned about planet Earth and explored chemical reactions through fun, hands-on activities like making ice cream and hokey pokey.

The arts were another major focus, with the tamariki sampling a variety of creative disciplines including music, dance, visual art, a dedicated art programme at the Hundertwasser Art Centre, and drama. They honed their songwriting skills by rewriting lyrics, engaged in creative writing, and even took part in shooting short films.

Additionally, they explored visual creativity through canvas art and tye-dye projects.

Connecting with nature was also a priority, as the Dreamers spent time outdoors, working in the garden at Te Kura O Otangarei. This provided them with an opportunity to get closer to nature and learn through hands-on gardening activities.

Sports activities were equally important, with the children participating in boxing, netball, and volleyball. These physical activities help to develop their coordination and teamwork as well as their overall fitness.
