In term 3, two of our Dreamers were given the opportunity to experience a unique seven day life changing voyage onboard the magnificent R. Tucker Thompson tall ship. Based in the Bay of Islands R. Tucker Thompson Sail Training Trust provides free experiences to young northlanders aged between 13-18 as part of its youth development voyages programme.
During a voyage the participants learn all about sailing and general seamanship such as basic navigation, how to read charts, as well as safety at sea. They also get to learn about the environment and marine ecology whilst exploring the stunning Bay of Islands.
The voyages also help participants to improve their confidence, leadership and social skills as well as having to work as team with others they’ve never met before. Both of the Dreamers who participated demonstrated massive improvements in all of these areas which are documented by the ship’s crew at the start and finish of each experience.
