“It’s about showing them that strength isn’t just physical, it’s about mindset, teamwork, and self-belief.”

The support of local business Classic Builders and the fundraising efforts of the Whangārei community in the Classic 100 held earlier this year has been transformed into a fun, fitness-focussed opportunity for local children. I Have a Dream have directed the funds raised in the March 2025 event to bring an in-school boxfit programme run by Dream Partner Whangārei Boxing Gym.

A pilot Boxfit programme is now up and running for groups of Year 3 and 4 students in two I Have a Dream partner schools
Tōtara Grove and Tikipunga Primary School. The programme is specifically designed for tamariki to channel energy, build resilience, and strengthen their connection to kura and classmates.

Dreamers can take up this opportunity during school hours, with sessions held at morning tea or lunchtime throughout Term Four.

School-Based Navigator and Team Lead Khinhtay-yee Matete said the programme was something she envisioned to give students a positive outlet for their energy while helping them build confidence, discipline, and emotional regulation in a fun, supportive way.

“This isn’t about fighting. It’s about fitness, fun, and building a positive mindset. Tamariki take part in games, skill-building activities, and structured physical challenges that help them grow in confidence and connection”

“It’s about showing them that strength isn’t just physical, it’s about mindset, teamwork, and self-belief.” She added having the programme available during the school day helps Navigators connect with more Dreamers, especially those who aren’t able to attend After School Programmes.
