Dreamers Take On Jiu Jitsu

"At the start of the term, the Dreamers were given their first belt, a moment that instilled a real sense of pride." Year 0-2 Navigator Angie Moselen

This term, our Totara Grove Year 5 Dreamers have been stepping onto the mats with Bush Jitsu owner and head coach Brennan Matheson, alongside programme facilitator Gina McInnes, and the transformation has been remarkable.

Brennan, who usually teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at his Whangārei martial arts school, has loved bringing his passion directly into the kura. Each Monday, he and Gina arrive to find the Dreamers already hard at work, hauling out the large set of mats from the shed and piecing them together with teamwork and pride. That responsibility alone has become part of the learning: showing up, preparing the space, and taking ownership of their programme.

Navigator Angie Moselen says that at the start of the term, the Dreamers were given their first belt, a moment that instilled a real sense of pride. Since then, their commitment has been inspiring, especially watching the girls step into the sport with the same strength, determination, and enthusiasm as the boys. The energy on the mats is focused, respectful, and full of curiosity.

Throughout the afternoon sessions, Dreamers learn far more than grappling techniques.

They’re discovering:

  • How to move their bodies efficiently and safely
  • How to stay calm under pressure
  • How to regulate emotion when things get tough
  • How to think clearly in challenging moments

These skills reach well beyond the dojo, they’re life tools.

What stands out most is the deep respect the Dreamers show Brennan, a black belt, and Gina, who holds a blue belt. Their guidance is met with genuine appreciation, and every moment on the mats is relished. The growth in confidence, skill, and self-belief is visible week after week.
