“We love working with the Dreamers and Navigators from I Have a Dream. For me, it’s the highlight of my week, guaranteed to fill my cup.

Since 2022, Dreamers from Whangārei’s I Have a Dream partner schools have been welcomed into a dedicated after-school arts programme at the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery, which has turned into a vibrant partnership that both organisations feel privileged to to be a part of.
Through this unique collaboration, over 580 Dreamers have taken part in between three and nine creative sessions, each one guided and facilitated by the incredible Hundertwasser team. With all resources provided, Dreamers are empowered to express their individuality through hands-on projects including clay sculptures, Dream Houses, stencil-making, and campaign poster printing based on social and environmental issues they care about.
These sessions take place in inspiring settings, from the Centre’s education and exhibition spaces to the afforested rooftop and Whangārei Art Museum. Giving Dreamers a truly immersive creative experience.
Hundertwasser’s Jacinda Selman, a former Totara Grove School teacher and long-time supporter of I Have a Dream, was thrilled to reconnect with the kaupapa in her current role.

“We love working with the Dreamers and Navigators from I Have a Dream. For me, it’s the highlight of my week, guaranteed to fill my cup. The Dreamers teach me what art is really about: knowing who you are and boldly being that, taking risks, and being open to new possibilities,” says Jacinda.
She also acknowledges the importance of the partnership in breaking down barriers.
“Hundertwasser Art Centre has a ticketed entry which is required to cover our running costs, and that can mean some community members miss out; especially in a cost-of-living crisis. Through our partnership with I Have a Dream, we can extend manaakitanga (support) to new audiences who might not otherwise have access to our exhibitions and programming. It’s a real privilege to work together.”
As part of the partnership, the Art Centre has hosted two private exhibitions showcasing Dreamer artwork and most recently, a public exhibition that was widely promoted and well attended, helping us reach a new and wider audience.
