The support of local business Classic Builders and the fundraising efforts of the Whangārei community in the Classic 100 held in 2025 has been transformed into a fun, fitness-focussed opportunity for local children. I Have a Dream have directed the funds raised from the event to bring an in-school boxfit programme run by Dream Partner Whangārei Boxing Gym,

The Boxfit programme is now up and running for groups of Year 3 and 4 students in two I Have a Dream partner schools Tōtara Grove and Tikipunga Primary School. The programme is specifically designed for tamariki to channel energy, build resilience, and strengthen their connection to kura and classmates. Dreamers can take up this opportunity during school hours, with sessions held at morning tea or lunchtime.

School-Based Navigator and Team Lead Khinhtay-yee Matete said the programme was something she envisioned to give students a positive outlet for their energy while helping them build confidence, discipline, and emotional regulation in a fun, supportive way. “This isn’t about fighting. It’s about fitness, fun, and building a positive mindset. Tamariki take part in games, skill-building activities, and structured physical challenges that help them grow in confidence and connection,” said Khinhtay-yee. “It’s about showing them that strength isn’t just physical, it’s about mindset, teamwork, and self-belief.”

“It’s another meaningful way to connect, support, and create opportunities for our tamariki to grow and thrive. We’re really grateful for the partnership and support of our kura in allowing us to pilot and implement this programme as another great step in creating positive, engaging experiences for our young people.”

Carefully designed to meet the needs of selected students, the programme places a strong focus on safety, support, and personal growth. Each session is led by three experienced trainers alongside Navigators, ensuring a low adult-to-child ratio and a nurturing environment.

Classic Builders also see this programme as a meaningful way to help Dreamers thrive. Regional Manager Scott Coutts said “Understanding the importance of both physical and mental wellbeing is so important for young people. At Classic Builders we aim to always lead by example, staying active and taking on challenges to keep ourselves healthy.”

As a Dream partner, Whangārei Boxing Gym share a closely aligned mission with I Have a Dream of empowering rangatahi through structure, discipline, and positive connection. Andrea Snowdon of Whangarei Boxing Gym said “We truly value the relationship between Whangārei Boxing, and I Have A Dream, and the shared belief that every young person can achieve more when they’re surrounded by strong, supportive mentors.”

Tamariki in the Boxfit programme will learn:

  • Discipline, Respect & Whanaungatanga – Learn to self-regulate, show respect for themselves and others, and strengthen a sense of belonging through positive group culture.
  • Social & Emotional Skills – Develop teamwork, communication, conflict management, and tools to manage their emotions in safe and constructive ways.
  • Confidence, Resilience & Engagement – Build self-belief, perseverance, and stronger engagement with school by having a space to succeed and be celebrated.
  • Healthy Outlet for Energy & Emotions – Gain a positive way to channel energy, reduce stress, and grow their hauora through structured physical activity.
  • Aroha, Kindness & Connection – Experience a strong sense of belonging, aroha, and positive relationships with both peers and supportive adults.

This collaborative community project is a great example of what happens when community champions come together to back our youth.
